1. Can solar panels work at night?
Theoretically, solar panels cannot work at night. Solar panels mainly utilize the sun’s radiant energy during the day to convert it into electricity. But it doesn’t mean that solar energy can’t power your home at night!
2. Reasons of solar panels can’t work at night
Solar panels are made up of a series of silicon wafers arranged in a series of silicon, which in turn has good electrical conductivity and chemical stability. The silicon negative and copper positive electrodes carry different charges between them, which interact with each other so that an electric field is formed.
The place where the electric field is generated is also the place where there is sunlight.
Sunlight in the form of photons or other forms of irradiation of solar panels will cause the electrons to have the ability to move, and under the action of the electric field, the electrons will move from the positive electrode to the negative electrode, producing a stable current.
The electrons need to move back and forth within the cell over a long period of time, and these moving electrons are the current in the solar system. The DC current is converted to AC current through an inverter and is then available for use in our household loads.
When there is no light, the electrons have no ability to move, and no current is generated.
3. The effect of other light sources on solar panels working at night
Solar panels need light to work, so at night there will be streetlights and the moon. Can solar panels work under these light sources?
Theoretically, it is possible. However, in reality, moonlight is light that comes from the moon to the earth, but this light does not originate from the moon, it is actually sunlight that originates from the sun. Essentially, moonlight is still sunlight. But instead of reflecting sunlight like a mirror, the moon only scatters some of the sunlight that hits its surface, resulting in moonlight that is far less intense than sunlight and not strong enough to produce electricity. The weaker light from streetlamps also makes it difficult for solar panels to generate electricity.
4. Solutions of solar panel can’t work at night
1. Solar battery: when the solar panels produce a certain DC voltage, the solar energy into electrical energy, and then forwarded to the solar charge controller, the solar panel will be transmitted to the battery for storage of electrical energy. At night, the battery supplies power to the AC load through the inverter.
2. Generator: At night, the solar panels are unable to generate electricity, and there will be a suspension of power supply, affecting our normalmente use of electricity. The use of diesel or gasoline generators to generate electricity can solve the problem of solar panels can not generate electricity, to ensure that the normal use of electricity continues.
3. Utility power: The solar system is connected to the utility power, and when the sun is not enough the power company will send power to our home through the grid, which also solves this problem for our daily use. On the basis of utility power, we can utilize all kinds of electrical appliances, thus facilitating our life and work.
4. Wind power: Wind turbines can also be used to replace solar systems at night to power household loads.
